The East Mesa Yankees needed 13 innings Saturday to subdue the Diablos 3-2 in a three-hour showdown for the 13u AA USSSA Super Ball Bash championship at Big League Dreams Sports Park in Gilbert.

The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the seventh inning, and both teams held their opponents scoreless but missed opportunities to score in extra innings. After six bonus frames, the Yankees won the game on an RBI single by Jonny Galetti in the top of the 13th and stellar defense in the bottom half, turning a line drive into a double play at first base.

The Yankees grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first and had a two-run advantage in the fourth. That lead never grew, however, and the Diablos were able to gain momentum after holding Yankee runners on base for much of the game. They cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth.

The Diablos caught a break in the seventh. The umpire sent a runner home to tie the game, ruling that a Yankee player had stuck out his foot in order to block the ball.

Yankees coach Dominick Calise discussed the call with the umpire, who had been calling a tight, but consistent game.

“I just asked for an interpretation on the ruling of the play,” Calise said. “But he didn’t give me much to work with and told me the left fielder blocked the ball with his foot.”
