Nogales pitcher Robert Gonzalez proved too much for Arcadia Saturday morning, leading the Apaches to a 6-2 win over the host Titans in the final game of the season-opening Skyline Tournament.
After allowing a run in the first inning, Gonzalez buckled down and stopped the Arcadia offense for the remainder of the game. The compact right-hander struck out five, walked two and allowed two earned runs in a complete-game victory.
“We need to get back to the fundamentals and stay in the strike zone,” said coach Ken Rudolph of his Titans, who went 2-2 in the tournament after winning the first two games.
Arcadia pitcher Mike Scannell pitched a scoreless first inning before struggling with control in the second. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Kevin Rosas, who tripled down the line in right field to make it 3-1. The Apaches scored once more in the inning on a balk by reliever Gary Cornish to make it 4-1.
The Titans seemed poised to take control of the game early. Leadoff batter Brendan Satran smacked the first pitch he saw straight up the middle for a single. He stole second, moved to third on a single by Andrew Naderer and scored two batters later on Max Schuman’s sacrifice fly.
Arcadia put men on base in the second through fifth innings, but each time Gonzalez escaped. Arcadia finally plated one more run in the sixth inning when Jake MacWilliam scored on Andrew Serna’s sacrifice fly to short right. Satran came within a few feet of getting the Titans back into it when he flew out to the warning track in deep left with a runner aboard.
“Baseball is a funny game,” said Rudolph. “We had a number of guys hit the ball hard today, it just happened to be right at people.”
The Apaches added insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Keith Zuniga and an RBI single by David Alapizco.
Arcadia played strong defense on the infield, turning two double plays that ended Apache scoring chances. Catcher Eddie Lyon also threw out a runner attempting to steal.
