Hawaii had been hanging around the Valley for more than a week. and the Rainbow Warriors got to bat in the bottom half of the innings. But ASU didn’t let the Warriors feel at home Saturday night even for half an inning, scoring four runs in the first on the way to a 12-1 victory in the NCAA baseball regional in Tempe.

ASU advanced to the 6 p.m. Sunday championship round. The Sun Devils were to face the winner of the “bake off,” the 1 .m. Sunday afternoon game between Hawaii and San Diego. If ASU were to lose Sunday, an “if necessary” was scheduled for Monday night.

Against Hawaii — which played the previous weekend in the WAC postseason tournament that was held in Mesa and elected to stay in town —  Brophy graduate Drew Maggi got things started for the Devils by reaching on an error. He took third on Zack MacPhee’s single.

Former Buckeye start Kole Calhoun grounded out to second, plating Maggi. Riccio Torrez was by a pitch. Johnny Ruettiger then tripled to make it 3-0. Deven Marrero, scoring Ruettiger.

MacPhee, of Sandra Day O’Connoer, finished 4-for-5 and was among four Sun Devils to homer. Kole Calhoun (Buckeye High), Marrero and Raoul Torrez (Brophy) hit home runs. MacPhee, Marrero and Ruettiger each drove in three runs. Riccio Torrez (Brophy) had three hits.

Seth Blair (12-0) pitched seven innings, struck out eight, allowed three hits and one run. He did not walk a batter.

Jake Barrett from Desert Ridge and Jimmy Patterson from McClintock finished off the game for ASU.
