The losing streaks continue, but has a new era for ASU football started?
Freshman Brock Osweiler replaced senior Danny Sullivan as ASU’s quarterback in the second half Saturday night.
“We’ll sit down and evaluate,’’ ASU coach Dennis Erickson said.
Osweiler didn’t lead ASU to a come-from-behind victory as the Sun Devils lost for the third straight week and fell to USC for the 10th year. He did lead the Sun Devils into the end zone, something Sullivan couldn’t do in the first half.
And Osweiler turned the ball over once, an interception on a Hail Mary pass in the final seconds of the game.
Sullivan, a senior who is a first-year starter, has struggled at times. But he was averaging 207.2 yards passing per game. He had completed 54.4 percent of his passes. Those are solid but not spectacular numbers.
In the first half Saturday, he completed 12 of 23 passes for 113 yards with two interceptions.
Sullivan has nine interceptions and eight touchdown passes.
Osweiler competed 11 of 27 passes for 153 yards.
Interestingly enough, a lot had been made during the week about ASU using third-string quarterback Samson Szakacsy in short yardage situations to take advantage of his running ability. He never got in the game. |
