Xavier beat Desert Vista 9-0 Thursday in badminton, continuing the Gators’ streak of perfection.
The Xavier varsity and junior varsity are 3-0 and have not dropped a singles or doubles match this season. In Thursday’s game, all singles and doubles matches were won without splitting.
The No. 2 Junior Varsity singles match was one of the closest of the afternoon. Desert Vista’s Marissa Mellinger, played hard against Jessica Michael forcing their first game to set before Michael won in a close 13-10 score. Michael came back strong and finished the second game with an 11-3 victory.
On Tuesday, Xavier beat Mountain View 9-0.
Cate Welch beat Katie Biegal 11-1, 11-0 in the No.1 singles match. Carissa Papas (No.2) defeated McKensie Pillow 11-1, 11-2. Danielle Dozer (No. 3) beat Josie Gleave 11-4, 11-0. Danielle Mark (No.4) beat Chelsea Branch 11-2, 11-0, Julia Friedman (No,5) defeated Ally Le 11-3, 11-1.Weslie Norris (No.6) defeated Paige Davis 11-0, 11-1.
Welch/ Dozer, Pappas/ Mark and Friedman/ Norris won in doubles.
Kerstin Ozkan, Tracy Carneal, Elizabeth Dobbins, Jamie Hulsey, Erin McKenna and Danika Worthington won junior varsity singles and doubles matches for Xavier.
The final score in Arizona high school badminton is determined by the results of six singles and three doubles matches. Each match has three games that are played to 11 points in singles and to 15 points in doubles. The winner of two out of three of the games takes the match. |
