After watching just a few minutes of the Arcadia vs. Queen Creek game, it is instantly apparent why the Titans’ girls junior-varsity basketball team went undefeated this season.
Arcadia’s JV team won all 19 games it played, closing out the year Tuesday with a 56-18 romp past Queen Creek at home.
Coach Drew Farenell credits the team’s success to the girls’ hard work and dedication to the game and to each other.
“It’s all about the work ethic,” Farenell said. “These kids come out and work hard every single day. They want to practice. Not to mention, these kids all love each other and you can tell by the way they play on the court.”
The team didn’t have an easy season, though. The girls had to work hard for every win they earned.
“We had two big games from Seton,” Farenell said. “They played us pretty tough. They play good man-to-man defense. The kids knew that going in, and they were prepared and took care of the business they needed to take care of.”
Arcadia had a 10-point run in the first quarter and never trailed against the Bulldogs. The Titans successfully pressed and trapped and got multiple steals that they converted into points.
Guard Kennedy Brunkhorst showed excellent ball-handling skills that allowed the Titans to push the pace of the game. Kylie Herd had a three-point play.
The Titans played clean, tough and active defense. The Bulldogs were only able to score four points in the first quarter. The Bulldogs struggled to play clean defense, as they racked up six fouls in the first quarter.
The Titans led 19-4 after a quarter and 32-12 at half. Herd scored eight points in the second quarter, six off rebounds.
Brunkhorst shined in the fourth quarter for the Titans. She drove the ball through the middle of the lane, and scored six more points.
Herd led all scorers with 19 pints.
The Arcadia roster included Amber Scharnow, Diana Musina, Kennedy Brunkhorst, Selena Edwards, Laura Herman, Gabby Evans, Sara Finley, Courtney Ramirez, Kylie Herd, Dotti Stuart and Maise Tuipulotu. |
