The Tucson Flash hung on early and put it away late Sunday, beating Yo Attitude 45-35 in the sixth grade final of the USSSA Summer Sizzle boys basketball tournament at the Guadalupe Boys and Girls Club.

The game was hotly contested all the way up until the last two minutes, when the Flash began to pull away.

Yo Attitude stayed within striking distance for much of the second half but was forced to start fouling as the clock began to work against them late in the game.

Down 17-15 at the half, Yo Attitude traded baskets with the Flash in the second half until Aaron Allen made a basket with 3:48 remaining to make it 39-33. Luke Chon was fouled on the other end and made both free throws, and no one scored again until Nate Unruh hit a shot with 1:59 left to put the Flash up 43-33.

Although the game stayed close throughout, the Flash actually never trailed after the 5:58 mark of the first half.

Every time Yo Attitude scored to get close or tie the game, it seemed like the Flash answered almost immediately to put them back in control.

Nate Renfro was a big reason the Flash was able to remain on top, especially in the second half. Renfro scored 10 points, with eight of them coming in the second 20 minutes.

“I couldn’t say more about him,” Flash coach Christopher Loya said of Renfro. “He’s an amazing kid and he played a great, great weekend.”

On the other side, Stephan Smith was a one man show for Yo Attitude. Smith accounted for over half of his team’s scoring, leading all players with 18 points. He connected on four three-pointers, but that was part of the gameplan for Loya, who said he told his team to focus on stopping penetration while allowing the long jumpers.

“We just talk about protecting the basket,” Loya said. “If they’re going to beat us with 30- or 25-footers, then we’ll let them.”

Jordan Lane was the leading scorer for the Flash, finishing with 12 points. Chon had 10, Dakota Korsiemon had six and John Burch contributed five.

For Yo Attitude, Max Kufel had eight points, Malik Collins had three and Jordan McGee and Allen each pitched in with two.
