Kevin Parkhurst birdied the 17th hole at Los Colinas Golf Club Sunday for a one-point victory in the boys championship flight of the Junior Golf Association of Arizona Spring Stableford.

Parkhurst of Vail had six birdies on the day on the par-71 course and edged out Derek Laporte of Tucson 42-41. Laporte had the only eagle of the tournament, with a 3 on the par-5 15th.

The event uses a modified Stableford scoring system, which gives 0 points for a double bogey, 1 point for a bogey, 2 points for a par, 3 points for a birdie, 4 points for an eagle and 6 for a hole-in-one.

Andy Fraser of JGAA said the tournament provides variety for the golfers.

“And we want to show them that there are formats,’’ he said.

Anna Kim of Chandler ran away with the girls championship flight, amassing 37 points for a 12-point victory
