Betty Smith sits inside a red golf car as she remembers over two decades of volunteer service. It is a warm morning, just minutes before another Junior Golf Association of Arizona tournament tees off, and today, Smith is in charge of assigning tasks to parents.
This is in adition to Smith's normal duties helping junior golfers understand the rules of golf, scoring and etiquette. She says she's a very social person and enjoys the contact of instructing kids. And she has more than just the JGAA under her belt.
Since coming to Arizona in 1969, Smith's been involved in golf advisory planning committees, scoring for the Phoenix Open, the LPGA and the Arizona State men's and women's programs.
Now she uses her experience, time and energy to help kids.
"I like to work with the 12 and under because it is kind of a teaching," she said. "I just like working with the kids."
JGAA Director Tom Cunningham said Smith has received awards for her volunteer efforts. Cunningham also said that young golfer remember her even after they leave the program.
"Many of the juniors who have come through the program remember her," Cunningham said. "Very few people give the time and energy that Betty has over the years."
Smith says it is dedication and a desire to teach that keeps her wanting to help the kids.
"It's very self satisfying," she said. "It's fun to see the kids progress."
And, she said, "It keeps me young" |
