Xavier College Preparatory is home to students who excel in academics, but it has been proven that it also houses some of the state's top golfers.

Last year, Xavier won its 27th state championship, the 11th straight. Xavier has won the region golf tournament 20 times since 1979. With these statistics, it is not surprising that the Xavier golfers are already off to a 4-0 start.

Four new golfers have joined the noteworthy team this year; three freshmen andone1 junior, bringing the team total to 11 players.  The top five players include senior Katerina Ruzickova, juniors Kaira Martin and Daffodil Sanchez, sophomore Sara Schmelzel and senior Sierra Sanchez.

The team lost four seniors last year, and all but one are now playing golf at colleges and universities across the country on golf scholarships.

Sister Lynn Winsor, who coaches Xavier golf along with Tui Selvaratnam, claims that Xavier is going to give the state and region championships "a good shot."

"We have three girls returning who played in state last year," she said, referring to Ruzickova, Martin, and Schmelzel.

Winsor does not take a win for granted, however, declaring that Hamilton and Corona del Sol High Schools are tough competition for the team.

She stays confident, though, saying that the team has, "dedicated golfers and superb student athletes who pursue the Xavier tradition of excellence."
