John Marsters scored a goal and added an assist Sunday in a 2-1 victory as the Polar Bears rallied in the series to beat the Idaho Jr. Steelheads in Western States Hockey League playoffs.
The Polar Bears won the series 2 games to 1. They lost the first game and fell behind 2-0 in the second game before prevailing 3-2 in overtime. All three games were played in Idaho.
The Polar Bears advance to the Western Division championship. They will play the Fresno Monsters in a best of three series this weekend. The Monsters beat the San Diego Gulls 2 games to none in the first round.
The winner of the series goes on the championship of the league. The Western States Hockey League is a Junior A third tier league that stretches from California to Texas and Oklahoma.
Marsters set up Gaven Hohl for a power play goal in the first period, giving the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead. Rick Wozniak also assisted. Marsters made it 2-0 when he scored at 7:39 of the second period. Wozniak and Derek Tomes assisted on the goal.
Pat Coyne scored for Idaho early in the third period, but Polar Bear goalie Scott Crowther was able to make the lead stand up. He finished with 25 saves.
On Saturday, the Steelheads took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by David Fegler and Tyson Cox. The Polar Bears cut it to 2-1 in the second period when Gaven Hohl scored with a two-man advantage. Jake Boese assisted.
Marcus Mitchell tied the game on a short-handed goal midway through the third period. Derek Champlin assisted on the goal.
Ryan Killeen scored the winner at 11:25 of ovetime. Micthell and Hohl assisted. |
