As the Arizona State Youth Lacrosse League Division I championship wound down Saturday night at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, the PA announcer warned fans several times to stay off the field after the game.

Fans came pouring onto the field anyway. Little could be done to stop the scores of Chaparral fans on a night when little could be done to stop the scores of the Chaparral Firebirds lacrosse team.

Chaparral took its first Division I lacrosse state title, overcoming two-time defending state champion Brophy and its well-regarded defense for a 10-7 victory.

“I’m glad we got to play it here,’’ said Chaparral coach John Silky, who was surrounded by well-wishers and soaked with Gatorade.

In the Division II championship game, Tucson Salpointe Catholic came back from a four-goal deficit to beat Horizon 10-9.

On a weekend when all the AIA-sanctioned high school spring sports were holding state championships, a club sport drew an estimated 5,000 fans for its championship doubleheader.

Chaparral led from the first quarter on and was able to keep the Broncos from mounting consistent pressure.

“We had a game plan, and we executed it,’’ Silky said. “We played disciplined defense. The whole team played great.”

Andreas Haglund scored three goals and had two assists for Chaparral. Eric Lakin and Payson Clark scored two goals each.

Jeffrey Petznick,, Carter Williams and Kyle Mason scored one goals each for the Firebirds.

Adam Fishman scored four goals for Brophy. Trevor Howards scored two and Samuel Tarvis one. Andrew Blumenherst added an assist.

Brophy showed championship character in the final minutes.

Goals by Clark and Lakin gave Chaparral a 10-5 lead with 3:15 to go. But the Broncos kept scrapping right until the end, and Fishman and Howard scored goals in the final two minutes.

Salpointe showed the same never-say-die spirit in the Division II game. The Lancers trailed the Huskies 8-4 midway through the third quarter but scored four successive goals and tied the score early in the fourth quarter.

“Unbelievable,” co-coach Dean Greenberg said. “This is the greatest bunch of kids you’d ever want to coach. They never give up.”

Horizon wasn’t done either. Matt Bolin scored his second goal of the game to put the Huskies back on top with 7:45 left.

The Huskies put the ball in the net again with 4:37 left, but the goal was waived off. A timeout had been called just before the play.

Salpointe turned up the heat. Horizon goalie Brandon Warshawsky was able to make several outstanding saves before the Lancers broke through.

Cameron Wilhite tied it on an assist from Robert Way and then scored the winner for Salpointe with 1:26 left. He finished with five goals.

Adam Schubert led Horizon in scoring with three goals and an assist. Eric Laub had a goal and three assists. Kyle Lapointe scored two goals, Robert scored one and Mark Nelson added an assist.

Warshawsky finished with 13 saves.

Chris Campbell and Andrew Harter had strong games for the Huskies.
