Shannon Fox was looking through her contacts. Abra Amwake needed contacts to look through. That led to be a winning combination in the women’s open division Thursday at the USA Volleyball Arizona Region Junior Beach tournament at Victory Lane Sports Park in Glendale.

Fox needed a partner for the event and got ahold of Amwake, a teammate at Scottsdale Community College and Fox’s sometime beach partner.

Amwake, a former Phoenix Central and Arizona Sky standout, recently moved to San Diego but was in town.

“It’s kind of a funny story why I’m even in Phoenix this week,’’ Amwake said. She ran out of contact lenses and had to come home to get some.

So when Fox called, Amwake accpeted the invitation.

Fox , 23, and Amwake, 25, made it to the final against Katie Rutherford and Madie Kingdon, who were both fresh off helping the Arizona Sting to a tie for 18th in the 18u National division at the USA Volleyball Girls' Junior Olympic Championships in Miami, Fla.

Rutherford and Kingdon easily won the first game 21-15. But the more experienced players were able to adjust. Fox and Amwake won the second game 21-15.

“We controlled the ball a lot more,’’ Fox said.

After falling behind 5-3 in the third game, Fox and Amwake won nine of the next 11 points on the way to a 15-9 victory.

Controlling the ball was also a key for the men’s winners, Tanner Crandell and Shawn Coates, who bested Dave Brown and Vince Zanzucchi 21-15, 21-14 in a match that ended after midnight.

All four men’s finalists are experienced adult beach players. The open division was added as part of the junior calendar to give adult and college athletes the opportunity to play.
