After a busy summer, Madie Kingdon and Jared Morrison finally are getting time to spend on the beach – or at least on beach. They paired up to win Thursday to win the open the USA Volleyball Arizona region co-ed beach tournament at Victory Lane in Glendale.

Kingdon spent most her summer playing for the Arizona Storm team that tied for 18th in the 18u National division of the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships.

Morrison, considered by some to be the top boys high school player in the state last spring, graduated form Mountain Pointe and led Molten 18 Black to a second-place finish in the 18u boys club division.

Kingdon made the final the previous week in the women’s open tournament. This was Morrison’s first tournament of the season.

Morrison and Kingdon beat John Sharpnek and Leah Bradley 15-11. Sharpnek was limping throughout the final.\

“We tried not to take too much advantage of that,’’ Morrison said.

Kandall Bergsten and Adam Gerards won the 18u division, beating Brittany Oddo and Andrew Yanashiko 15-13 after losing the first game 23-21.

Gerards said he was confident he and Bergsten could come back and win the “if” game.

“We just needed to control the ball,’’ he said.

Nick Benson and Becca Sponcil were all smiles after beating Kayle Steckman and Dustin Odorcic  15-11 in the 16u final. A positive attitude helped the pair make it through the draw, Sponcil said.

“We just kept smiling even when we were behind,’’ she said.
