The Academy took home its third straight club title Saturday night at the Junior High State Wrestling Championships at Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe. Safford won the school points title and finished first overall.

Academy athletes won three of the four outstanding wrestler awards, which were given entirely on points. Jarrod Forsman (73 pounds), Glenn Farina (104) and Daniel Cartegna (116) of the Academy won outstanding wrestler wards. Eloy’s Danny Romero, the 142-pound champion, took the other.

Academy racked up 225.5 points in the club standings.  Chain Gang was second with 170. Then came Arizona Sunkids with 157.5, Desert Devils (149.5) and East Valley (94.5).

“It’s great to see the kids win after they worked so hard,” Academy coach Melvin Douglas said.

In the school standings, Safford  had 254 points, followed by Eloy (165), Deer Valley (114.5) and Altadena (84).

“Everybody stepped up,’’ Safford coach Frank Gutierrez said.

Safford received some unexpected points from Eric Holmquist (125) and Ramon Marrieta (200).

“This is what we worked for the whole year,’’ Gutierrez said.
