A win by the Scottsdale Blackhawks 97 and a draw by Sereno White 97 on Saturday moved the Blackhawks into first place in boys U13 Division 1 State League soccer.

Scottsdale (4-1-0) pulled away late for a 3-1 win over TSA 97 Red Saturday afternoon at Reach 11. Sereno (3-0-2), the first-place team entering the day’s play, played immediately after the Blackhawks and tied the CCV Stars Black 1-1

Blackhawks 3, TSA 1

The game started off at a slow pace until Edward Wintergallen almost scored on a well-placed shot from just outside the penalty box, but TSA goalie made an impressive save.

The first goal was scored in the 23rd minute by TSA forward Nicholas Duarte on an assist from Ricardo Ordonez. Ordonez pushed the ball down the field and lobbed it over two defenders, straight to Duarte.

Jose Ortiz scored the equalizer in the 30th minute from the right side of the box, as the goalie came out too far and left the goal unprotected.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams playing superb offense. Players unselfishly shared the ball and gave each other good looks.

Gavino Carraza of the TSA put up a strong performance, dribbling the ball and beating multiple defenders on several possessions, but his team remained scoreless.

Zachary Marks broke the tie in the 61st minute. About two minutes later, Adrian Olias drove into the penalty box and scored the final goal.

“Both teams competed very hard, but this was a situation where the team was coming of the break, so fatigue was a factor,” said Blackhawks coach Adam Burke.

“We were short-handed with only 12 players because of injuries, they pressured and pressured us, and finally wore us down,” said TSA coach Jeff Rogers.

Sereno 1, CCV 1

Radiel Nava of the third-place Stars (2-1-2) and Lennon Brooks of Sereno scored the goals, and Sereno played a man down for most of the second half because of a red card on Santos Villasenor.

Villasenor received the red card for throwing an elbow while battling for the ball. Sereno still held CCV’s offense from penetrating the penalty area most of the second half.

“The problem is that we didn’t play with a lot of composure,” said CCV coach Harry Demos.

Brooks scored his goal in the seventh minute after a mix-up between defenders resulted in a clear look.

CCV had two fair opportunities in the next five minutes but were unable to finish. The Stars scored in the 23rd minute when Nava had the ball near the goal line.

In the final minutes of extra time, CCV quickened the pace and intensity, attempting four shots from up close and at distance. Only one came near the crossbar, as it flew past the goalie.
