The Diablos broke open the game with eight runs in the second inning.
“That was when our offense really started kicking into gear,” said coach Shannon Wilson.
Kiara Kennedy singled in Madison Bradford for the game’s first run. Later in the inning, Makenzie McBride hit a two-RBI double, plating Summer Pryor and Lilly Giller.
Giller had a big day in the circle, striking out nine batters. She was also strong on offense with an RBI single and scoring twice, including stealing home in the bottom of the fourth to end the game by run rule.
The Cobras loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with Alexis Basurto, Aviena Alvarez and Alena Alexander each hitting singles, but they were unable to capitalize.
“That team was a little more experienced than us,” said Cobras coach Jim Creason. “They have a great team and are well-coached.”
Creason said he was very pleased with the way his team performed in the tournament.
“They really stepped up their play this weekend,” he said. “We haven’t been together too long, and this was the first tournament we have traveled to.”
Wilson said he was happy with the performance of the Lady Diablos and cited strong pitching and solid fundamentals as keys to their success. |
