Hotshots Gold-Davis jumped out to an early lead Sunday afternoon and captured the 18u Open TCS State Championship with a 7-2 victory over the Desert Ice.

The Hotshots scored all of their runs in the first two innings before Ice reliever Kaity Greco put a stop to the offensive onslaught.

Hotshot Katie Appelbe led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and later tied the game 1-1 when Chelsea Yankolovich reached on an error.

Hotshot cleanup batter Megan Johnson then nailed a two-run homerun over the wall in left to give the Hotshots a 3-1 lead they would not surrender.

The Hotshots added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Taylor Piper led off the with a single and moved all the way to third when the Ice fielded a Steph Pesqueira bunt and threw the ball over the first baseman’s head.

With two runners on, Elyssa Harstock cleared the bases with a 2-run ground-rule double to left.

Harstock’s double looked like it might have cleared the wall when the Ice leftfielder dove and inadvertently knocked the fence over. After some discussion by the umpires, the ball was ruled short of the wall and a ground-rule double.

The Hotshots took a 7-1 lead later in the inning when Yankolovich doubled and scored on a single by Jess Belsterling.

The Ice looked ready to pound Hotshot starter Ashley Quigley early in the first inning. After strikeout, Kailey and Lauren Regester gave the Ice a 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles. The Desert Ice could not capitalize further, however, as Quigley quickly regained composure and retired the next six batters in a row.

Quigley allowed two runs and six hits over six innings to pick up the victory. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
